7 Useful Road Trip Apps

The best free travel road trip apps for your next adventure. Includes iPhone, iOS and Android apps.

For my road trip, I’m using my phone a lot and here are some of my favorite apps:

I love me some Google Maps but Waze is perfect for road trips since it’s goes beyond traffic – other users let you know about accidents, police, among other things. It even gives you a gas feature so you can find the cheapest gas station nearby.

Roadside America

This app helps you find quirky stops along the way. You get one region for $2.99 or $5.99 for all of US/Canada. I purchased the Southern region which got me 10 states which covered 4 of the states I was traveling in. It’s easy to look ahead to where you’re traveling to or search nearby.

In addition to road trip guides or searches, you can save your upcoming road trips and search for destinations along the way. It’s easy to save stops that interest you. It also gives you a gas estimate!

I’ve done too many road trips where I’m constantly changing the radio station as I’m going in and out of range. Spotify allows you to listen music the whole trip and has tons of options. We love to listen to Broadway musicals and Comedy.

I discovered Audible after doing a couple 10 hour trips. Listening to books keeps me entertained and never bored on a trip. We especially like memoirs because they’re often read by the author. We’re currently listening to The Girl with the Lower Back Tattoo by Amy Schumer.

This app gives me lots of dog-friendly hotels, restaurants and parks. This has definitely come in handy when we’ve wanted to stop for food but don’t want to leave Bruno in the car.

The Yelp app has an awesome nearby feature. This is great for finding something on the fly – such as a nearby Starbucks or place to stop for food.
